"Old? Who's old?" - Said the elderly Leaf while outrunning their BEV counterparts

Outlander PHEV Best Seller in June

There were 1.572 units registered in Sweden last month, a 17% increase over the same period last year, this being the best result since last September, keeping the EV Share at 4.23%, comfortably ahead of last year 3.6%.

Looking at June Best Sellers, for the first time this year the VW Passat GTE is not topping the ranking, as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV delivered 271 units in June, beating the German midsizer, while the Nissan Leaf has once again beaten the odds and registered 123 units, a 112% increase YoY. For a model that is months away from being replaced, it looks that Nissan is willing to milk it until the end, selling them with large discounts and giving bargain hunters across Sweden a reason to buy the best (Only?) discount EV on the market.

Also of notice are the 103 registrations of the Kia Optima PHEV, its best result ever, possibly signaling some large company fleet deal.

Looking at the YTD models ranking, there weren't many changes at the top, with the most important being the rise of the Tesla Model S to Fourth Place, thanks to 66 deliveries, which, by the way, is the lowest peak-month result for the Californian since 2014.

Is the Model 3 already making itself noticed?

Interestingly, the Tesla Model X also had its worst peak month since it arrived, dropping one position to #9 and losing the Best Selling Luxury SUV status to the Volvo XC90 PHEV, that thanks to 111 units (Year best), changed positions with the American Minivan-that-thinks-its-a-Sports-SUV.

Besides the aforementioned Kia Optima PHEV surge, which allowed it to jump to #12, the BMW 530e is confirming the early success, now being #18 and Best Selling Rookie, but i bet it won't be for long, as Volvo's new babies, the S/V90 T8 twins and the XC60 T8 SUV start to get their engines running. Will we see them being sold in the hundreds per month soon?

Speaking of new models, there was a new PHEV arriving last month, with the new longer-range Porsche Panamera PHEV landing with 13 units, a significant result that already outsold its SUV brethren, the Cayenne PHEV.

Once again, the new-old plug-in adage applies: "The higher the (electric) range, the higher the sales"

On the EV manufacturers ranking, the leader Volkswagen (29%, down 2%) is firm at the leadership, followed from a far by Mitsubishi (15%) in the runner-up place, while BMW (13%) is Third.

Plug-Ins Versus Regular Hybrids

Pl Model June
1 Toyota Auris Hybrid 374
2 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
271
3 Kia Niro Hybrid 269
4 Volkswagen Passat GTE 247
5 Toyota C-HR Hybrid 221

Combining June sales of regular hybrids with plug-ins, the Toyota Auris is back at the top of the podium, with Toyota milking its compact hybrid as much as it can, including generous discounts, with the Outlander PHEV keeping its Second Place, followed by the hot selling Kia Niro.

The VW Passat GTE was only Fourth, with the trendy Toyota C-HR Hybrid closing the Top 5 with 221 units.

With Kia getting ready to add a plug to the Niro, Toyota sees itself being outrun by the Hyundai-Kia siblings, with these two now preparing themselves to play big in the plug-in game.

Either Toyota adds a plug to their next generation of hybrids, or they just get in to a cycle of slowing sales, on a slow path to irrelevance.
