Return of the e-Golf

The Norwegian plug-in market grew 43% last month to 5.389 units, leading to an increase in the YTD tally to 36.452 registrations, up 27% YoY, keeping  the plug-in share at 35%.

Looking at August Top Sellers, a lot has changed regarding the previous month, with Volkswagen coming back with a vengeance, not only the e-Golf topped the ranking with 996 units, a new record for the all-electric Golf, but the Passat GTE also returned to the Top 5, with 356 registrations, its best performance in six months.

On the other hand, the Nissan Leaf seems to be finally losing its breath, selling only 264 units, its lowest result this year.

Looking at the YTD ranking, the most important news were the VW e-Golf winning back the Number One spot, displacing the BMW i3 to Second, while two particular duels in the Top 10 are making headlines, with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and VW Passat GTE running for Fourth, and Best Selling PHEV, separated by only six units, while in #10 we have the Mercedes B250e sprinting (Only one unit separates them) the BMW 225xe Active Tourer for a place in the Top 10 and the Best Selling MPV trophy.

The Audi A3 e-Tron registered 207 units last month (Year best), allowing it to climb to #14, while on the other hand, the recent Opel Ampera-e is stuck at #16 (Only 61 deliveries in August), suffering from bad allocation decisions coming from GM management, leaving Norwegian would-be customers starving, which according to some reports, is leading to a stampede of cancellations, with customers preferring to buy other models (eg, VW e-Golf), more readily available, instead of waiting for who knows how long for their Opel (I mean, let's face it, the Ampera-e is no Tesla Model 3...).

It's stuff like that damages a brands name, Opel...

In the manufacturers ranking, Volkswagen (23%, up 2%) is in the leadership, with BMW (17%, down 1%) in Second, while Mercedes (12% share) is in Third Place, ahead of Tesla and Nissan, both with 8%.

Footnote: Three additional Toyota Mirai and one Hyundai were added in July to the FCEV stock.

With 40% PEV share in August, the general market is showing a mixed cocktail of technologies, with only one ICE model, four HEVs, two PHEVs and three BEVs.

This month we have the VW e-Golf high above everyone else, with 500 units more than the Second Placed Toyota Yaris, with another BEV, the BMW i3,  rounding up the podium.

Two plug-in hybrids (Outlander PHEV and Passat GTE) follow, with two additional Toyota hybrids (RAV4 and C-HR) coming next.

Finally, in #8, the first and only ICE model appears, in the form of the Peugeot 3008, a Crossover that has recently landed and became the best selling ICE model last month, ahead of sure values like the Skoda Octavia.

But having the #11 (Mercedes GLC350e - 232 units) and #12 (Mercedes B250e - 231) spots also belonging to plug-ins, it won't be long until we see the Top 10 without any ICE model...Will it be in September already?
