Toyota And Mazda Pick Alabama For Their New $1.6 Billion Factory
Toyota and Mazda have reportedly picked Alabama as the site for their $1.6 billion joint factory.
According to Reuters, the new factory will be located in Huntsville, Alabama and will employ up to 4,000 people and produce around 350,000 vehicles per year. Toyota has already a big engine plant in the state, as well as an existing network of suppliers.
A formal announcement is imminent by the two companies, which have scheduled a press conference tomorrow at 15:00 EST.
Toyota is planning to build models like the Corolla there, while Mazda says it want to produce its SUVs there, which might include a new-gen CX-7 crossover, when the factory goes online in 2021.
The two companies had narrowed their choices in recent months down to two locations, in Alabama and North Carolina. Toyota has currently 10 factories in the U.S. and announced a capital alliance with Mazda last August, aiming to explore the joint development of EV technologies.
