Outlander PHEV Number One (For how long?)

An impressive 47.000 plug-ins were sold in 2017, up 27% YoY, with the PEV Share ending at a record 1.9% share, up from 1.5%, in 2016, and 1.1% in 2015.

This moderate growth should be put in the post-Brexit context, as the mainstream automotive market dropped (- 6%) for the first time since 2011, making this growth even more meritable, while the fuels mix is changing dramatically, as Diesel sales dropped 17% regarding 2016, losing 6% share, to 42%, to the benefit of Petrol cars (53%, +4%) and Alternative Fuels (HEVs + PEVs) which have seen their share grow from 3% in 2016, to the current 5%.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsu Outlander PHEV won for the the fourth consecutive time the Best Seller title, but the Japanese SUV domination is being strongly eroded, ending the year with just 15%, well below the 24% share of 2016, and miles away from the 41% it had in 2015.

Still, it was enough to outsell the Second Placed BMW 330e, a model that won its first medal, managing win Silver over the locally-made Nissan Leaf, in urgent need of the new version.

The remaining top positions went to the #4 BMW i3, up one position regarding the previous year, and confirming its warm welcome among private British drivers, while the Mercedes C350e dropped from the podium to the Fifth position.

In the manufacturers ranking, an affirmative BMW (29%) stole the 2017 title from the three times winner Mitsubishi (15% Share), thus winning its first manufacturers trophy in the British market, with Nissan ending in Third, with 12% share.

In 2017, Fuel Cells had their Year Two on the UK market, registering 37 units being registered (Up from the 10 units made in 2016), with the Toyota Mirai registering 33 of them.
