Outlander PHEV recovers #1

PEV sales were down in Iceland (-22%) last month, finally getting caught on the doom and gloom of the local mainstream market, but nevertheles, the 2019 PEV market share is still standing at 24%, the second largest in the World, so one can't really complain much.

Looking at the models ranking, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV recovered the leadership, having registered 56 units in February, allowing it to surpass the Nissan Leaf, that with 24 deliveries, had its worst month since August.

Looking elsewhere, BMW and the Koreans had reasons to smile about, with the BMW 530e up to #15, and its MPV sibling 225xe A.Tourer joining the Top 20, in #18, while the Kia Niro PHEV was up 3 spots to #7, and the Hyundai Ioniq Electric jumped straight into #12.

In the brands ranking, Mitsubishi (26%) recovered the leadership, followed by the #2 Nissan (20%), while  Volvo (14%) is 3rd, with a comfortable lead over BMW and Hyundai, both with 9% share.

In a market where plugins now have over 20% share, plug-ins are becoming more and more synonym with overall best sellers, despite not having full access to the mainstream models ranking, we do have access to regular hybrid sales.

If we add regular hybrids to plug-ins in February, the high share of these last ones is noticeable, as regular hybrids are being outrun by Plug-ins, with HEVs only having two representatives, in the form of the #3 Toyota RAV4 HEV or the #5 Toyota Yaris Hybrid.

Looking at the Top 6 best sellers, we see representatives of each technology, with three PHEVs (Outlander PHEV; Volvo XC90 PHEV, and Volvo XC60 PHEV), one BEV (Nissan Leaf) and two HEVs.

As plug-ins continue to increase share, expect at some point in 2019 this Top 5 to be 100% PEV, with PHEVs winning customers that previously went to unplugged hybrids.
