Model 3 steals the show in 49% share market
PEV sales are up in Iceland (+52% YoY) this year, against a backdrop of falling sales (-43%) in the overall market, pulling the 2020 PEV market share to an amazing 49% (28% BEV), the second largest in the World, almost doubling the 2019 score (25%). And to think that not long ago, in 2017, we were celebrating reaching 14% share...
Looking at the models ranking, the Tesla Model 3 reigns supreme after (finally!) deploying in March the Model 3 waiting list, displacing the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV from the leadership, which itself has a sizeable distance from the current #3, the Audi e-Tron.
Looking at June results, we should mention the good results of Volvo, that made its two SUVs return to this Top 10, with the highlight being the XC60 PHEV, that scored 16 units, its best performance in 14 months, allowing it to jump to #6.
The Koreans Hyundai Kona EV and Kia Niro EV are also in a good moment, and we could even see the Hyundai model have a go at the Bronze medal this year.

In a market where plugins now have almost half of the market, plugins are becoming more and more synonym with overall best sellers, despite not having full access to the mainstream models ranking, we can estimate how the Best Sellers ranking is right now.
Looking at the hypothetical overall Top 5 best sellers, we can witness the progressive electrification of the Best Selling models, replicating in its own way what is happening in Norway, right now the overall podium is fully electrified, with the fully electric Tesla Model 3 in the lead, followed by the plugin hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, while the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid closes the podium.
Outside the podium we can see the only ICE model on this Top 5, the #4 Dacia Duster (4 months ago, we had two ICE models in this Top 5), with the fully electric Audi e-Tron closing the Top 5.
So, Iceland is a sort of unsung hero of the EV Scene, because while it's still not quite at Norway's point of electrification (69% share and the Top 7 Best Selling models in the overall market are plugins), it is not that far off, as this overall Top 5 can show, with this small market being a favorite to complete its full electrification process right behind (1 year later?) the uncontested leader in this topic, Norway
